Third is the SSD drive in the hard drive bay that has Windows 7. This is where I installed LM17 and have grub installed on this device, so I can boot either system from the grub menu. Second is the drive in my hard drive caddy. On my T400, I have USB HDD listed first so I can boot from USB flash drive by simply plugging it in before booting. Once you have the boot order configured the way you want, press the F10 key to save your changes and exit BIOS. After getting the devices you want into the upper section, you then use the F5/F6 keys to change the boot priority order. Likewise, you can also move devices from the upper section to the lower section if you don't have them or use them, like USB FDD or USB CD for example. In order to move a device from the lower section into the upper section, you must select the device using the up/down arrow keys and then press the "x" key to move it up to the upper section. The machine ignores the devices in the lower section and can only boot from the devices in the upper section, in the order that they are listed there. The upper section contains the devices in the "Boot Priority Order" and the lower section contains the devices "Excluded from Boot Order". This screen is divided into an upper and a lower section. Then select "Start Up", then select "Boot". I'll describe what I had to do to change my own BIOS settings to adapt to the new hardware configuration.īoot your machine and press the F1 key at the BIOS splash screen. I also have Windows installed on the SSD and Mint on the drive in the hard drive caddy. Hello Stefan - Are you certain that you've examined all of your BIOS settings? I ask this because I own a Lenovo T400 and have a setup very similar to what you have, a solid state drive installed in the hard drive bay and my original hard drive installed in a hard drive caddy in the DVD bay. I hope some expert can help me with this problem! I hope the plan of Lenovo to avoid booting from 2nd HDD is not successful! PS: I used already several evenings to find a solution with extensive search. Has anybody here an idea how I can start my good MINT system on this computer? I need to start also win7, replacing the 1st HDD with my SSD is therefore no option. The problem is now that the start via system rescue CD is loading the kernel of system rescue CD instead of my MINT kernel This kernel does not support the wireless network of the Thinkpad and sound is also not working. This is working even the Linux HDD is the 2nd HDD in the system which is not offered by the BIOS as boot option. My next approach was then to use system rescue CD (USB) ( ) which is offering the option to search and boot any Linux system which can be found on the computer. I tried several things like changing both HDDs and using then GRUB2 to load the win7, but this was not working since the 2nd HDD (with win7 in this case) was not found by GRUB either. The problem is now that Lenovo does not allow to boot from the 2nd HDD (I guess this is limited to make the real Thinkpads more attractive). On the main HDD of this computer is Win7 installed. On this hard disc is Linux Mint installed. I moved my SSD from an old laptop to the CD slot of a Thinkpad Edge 15 (I use a proper HDD caddy).
